On the eve of the winter solstice, when the nights are at their longest, this session replenished my creative cup! Utilizing only ambient light, we told a story of an office worker and a boy from the wrong side of the tracks. A Capricorn and a Scorpio, a touch of “Grease” meets “Bladerunner.”
Films used were Ilford HP5 (pushed 1 stop) and Cinestill 800T taken on the Pentax 6x7 with Pentax 105mm lens. Developed and scanned by The Canadian Film Lab.
For photography lovers, the technical aspects involved a tripod, and most speeds were an absurd 1/15 - 1/30, this meant the couple had to be statuesque. It is a testimony to their fitness and control, as even walking and lifting shots were in fact stationary! This meant no breathing, no movement - channeling all our inner stoics. You can see the slow shutter speed used, by the blurry police car passing in the background, as the couple stand by the phonebooth.
The colour film is Cinestill 800T, a modified Kodak Vision3 500T 5219 motion picture film stock. It gives any neon lights, or city streets a futuristic movie-like atmosphere. I added a handful of digital images with my own Cinestill 800T preset to round out the gallery.
This session made me fall in love with HP5 film for some drama, and pushed it would be ideal for a low-lit getting ready location or wedding reception.
